It’s said to be the third most stressful event in a person’s life. We’re starting to move people into a few of our communities, and without preparing correctly what should be a joyous first day in a new home can turn into a total calamity. Here are our best tips to make moving day smooth sailing.

Best Practices

      Overnight Bags

Pack your toiletries, a change of clothes, sheets, towels, toilet paper, your laptop and chargers, and anything else you’ll need for your first night – you won’t want to search through piles of boxes to find a towel or a pair of sweatpants after a long day.

If you have kids, get them a coloured box or storage bin to pack their own essentials – all of the above, plus whatever they’ll need to keep them occupied and feeling at home like books or toys.

      Start Early

It’s wise to get a wide majority of your flotsam and jetsam packed up well before the big day. This includes off-season wardrobes, linens and pillows, fine china, books, lesser-used electronics, wall art, etc. While you’re at it, book a moving truck and movers – it’s recommended to do this 4 weeks in advance, especially if you’re moving around the 1st or the 15th.

      Keep An Eye on Valuables

In addition to jewelry and heirlooms, you should always include important documents like birth certificates, and passports. Don’t trust your movers with those – keep an eye on them yourself.

      Watch Your Boxes

Books and cookware often get jammed into boxes that become unmovable because they’re so heavy. Whether you’re using professional movers or plying your friends with pizza to help, keep boxes under 50 lbs. It’s also a good idea to number your boxes, so you’ll instantly notice if one of your seven kitchen boxes got lost in transportation. If you’re a real go-getter, creating a corresponding contents list for each box can save you a bit of time unpacking.

      Be Prepared

Keep another box aside with all the bits and pieces you’ll need to keep the move going steadily – cleaning supplies, paper towel, a broom, an allen key, screwdriver, hammer and nails, and scissors or a pocketknife for cutting tape. Don’t forget drinks and snacks! Bandaids and antiseptic can also come in handy.

      Moving With Kids

Discuss the move with your kids early, and keep talking about it to normalize the experience. If you can, going to visit the new house before the big day can help prevent tantrums. On moving day, giving them small tasks will help keep them occupied if having them at a babysitter’s isn’t an option.

Simple Pointers & Moving Hacks

Take photos of the way your electronic cords are hooked up, so you can reconnect them in a snap.

If you’re renting, take photos of the home you left and the home you’re moving into on the day of, just in case.

Defrost your fridge and freezer at least 24 hours in advance.

If you plan to sell unwanted items on Craigslist or Kijiji, start listing them six weeks in advance. Those sales can take longer than you might think.

Donate food you can’t take with you to a food bank – same goes for clothes and furniture.

Organize and label screws and fixtures from all around the house, and keep them in one place. Tossing them in big boxes is a great way to lose them.

Pack plates, records and art vertically instead of horizontally – they’re less likely to break that way.

Use Press & Seal plastic wrap to seal toiletries for a spill-free move. Rolling necklaces this way will also prevent tangles!

Use vacuum bags for clothes and textiles – you’ll make fewer trips, and take up way less space. Kids will love helping you vacuum them, too.

As always, follow along on Facebook and Twitter to stay in the loop on everything Paradise!

What moving tips would you add to this list?

No one knows better than us – moving is a daunting task!
