There’s archeological evidence to suggest that native people had settled hunting camps and small villages in this area as far back as 8000 B.C.E, though until the 1800’s Brampton was mostly still uninhabited wilderness. It wasn’t until the mid 1800’s that Brampton got its name. In 1819, what used to be known as ‘Buffy’s Corners’ was part of the Chinguacousy township. In 1834 Mr. John Elliott applied the name ‘Brampton’ when they began to settle the land. The settlement over the first half of the 1800’s was rather slow, as the ‘meandering’ creek in town didn’t offer much in terms of industry. By 1846 Brampton was home to only two stores, a tavern, a tannery, a cabinet maker, two blacksmiths and two tailors, with a population of 150.<\/p>\n

By the 1850’s things began to change. In 1856 the Grand Truck Railway brought the first railway and rail station to Brampton, triggering a boom in the economy. Brampton officially became a town in 1873. In the decade that followed the town held its first election, established its first hydroelectric generating plant, and emerged as ‘Flower Town’ of Canada with its many nurseries and greenhouses.<\/p>\n

As the years went on, Brampton continued to expand and flourish. In the 1950’s Bramalea was created – Canada’s first satellite community, and shortly after in 1974 the City of Brampton was created. Brampton’s population reflects an ever-growing multicultural community – representing 170 different cultures and over 70 different languages spoken. In 1982 Carabram was formed to celebrate the diversity of the area and join together different ethnic communities.<\/p>\n

Today Brampton is Canada’s 2nd fastest growing and 9th largest city. A bustling community that is home to over 8000 businesses. With a beautiful downtown that highlights historical buildings, newer developments such as the cultural Rose Theatre, and beautiful outdoor spaces, it’s a wonderful place to live, explore, and get to know.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
