When you think of Whitby, you think of small town charm. While there is no lack of charm in this lovely community, that doesn’t mean Whitby is sleepy. If anything, it’s the opposite! The population has been on the rise, with a 5.2% change reported between 2011 and 2016. Being a 30 minute drive from Toronto definitely has its benefits. On one hand you’re just a short ride away from a bustling city centre, but on the other, you’re just far enough away to enjoy the peace, quiet, and sense of neighbourhood that only a close knit community like Whitby can provide. It’s this community that makes Whitby such a great place to live. We spoke to some of Whitby’s most beloved small businesses and asked them what it is that they <3 about Whitby. Here’s what they had to say:
It’s hard to believe we’re already half way through the month of August. Questions like, ‘How did the summer breeze by so quickly’ and ‘Wait, what happened to my summer bucket list?!’ come to mind. Don’t let the date hinder your summer ambitions though! There’s still lots of time to check some of those items off your summer ’17 bucket list. One quintessential summer activity that you definitely don’t want to miss out on is a trip to the beach. A bonus to living in one of our Brampton, Kleinburg, or Whitby communities? The perfect beach day isn’t that far away! Here are some options for a day of sand and sun nearby.
With a population of roughly 128,377, Whitby is the perfect place to live. While it’s not exactly a ‘small town’ per say, it’s got that small town charm that can’t be beat. On the other hand, it’s not a large urban city either, but thankfully it has all the amenities and culture of one! You can explore the Station Gallery‘s latest exhibition, enjoy tunes from the Whitby Brass Band, or take in the latest show at the Whitby Courthouse Theatre. Each season the theatre puts on 3 productions that are visited by about 1500 guests. Their most recent production of Catch Me If You Can had a sold out run and finished to standing ovations and praise. Here’s a look at what’s up next!
While many GTA-ers are probably rejoicing at the lack of snow we’ve gotten in the area, others aren’t so thrilled. For many, winter is their favourite time of year. Not only is it picturesque, but the winter specific activities you can take part in are heaps of fun. For those who like to frolic in the snow they have to wait all year long to hit the slopes to snowboard, ski, or toboggan. A fresh coat of snow is also necessary if you want to do some cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Thankfully we’re expected to get a little over the weekend, and to celebrate, we’re listing off some great trails to snowshoe on in and around the Whitby area.
The winter season drums up a mixed bag of opinions. Some people love those frosty days, while others (literally) hide from them. The best way to approach winter and its below freezing temperatures is to just embrace it! Bundle up, get outside, and partake in all the fun winter activities the season has to offer. Whether you’re making snow angels, skiing on the slopes, or hunting down a warm and tasty hot chocolate, joining in the winter fun some way or another will make the time fly by. Another great winter activity, and probably one of Canada’s most beloved is ice skating! There are lots of great spots throughout the GTA to dust off your skates and hit the rink, but these are some of our favourites.
If you were to make a list of all the reasons fall is wonder, what would top it? The fact that Starbucks brings back the Pumpkin Spice Latte? Sweater weather? Turkey? All those reasons are valid, but another list topper? The beautiful fall colours. There’s a time in early October when all the trees become ablaze with bright colour, making any outdoor spot something to behold. It’s also a great reason to get outdoors and explore the wonderful nature around us. Here are some of the best spots to see fall colours in the GTA.
