At the beginning of every new year people sit down and write a list of all the goals and positive changes they want to make in their lives. While this task can be daunting, it can also be super helpful for setting a guideline to help you create the best possible year ahead. We think you should do the same thing for your home! A home represents your life and is the place you, your family, and friends spend the majority of their time together – shouldn’t it be the best it can possibly be too? We think yes! Here are some easy resolutions to keep in mind as you head into the new year.

Winter Cleaning

At the start of the spring season homeowners are busy tackling their spring cleaning to-do list. We think you should do the same thing at the start of the winter season. Winter can be grey and cold, so make sure the place you come home to each day is sparkling clean. Stay on top of salty, snowy, and muddy front entrances all winter long to make a good first impression. Give your kitchen and bathroom a fresh look by sweeping away any cobwebs that have gone unattended and a good scrubbing. Don’t forget your sanctuary! Spruce up your bedroom with a good tidy as well and maybe some new bedding.

Energy Efficiency

It’s easy to lose track of how you’re using your energy, and thus what you’re spending on it. There are lots of ways you can make a better effort with this though. Unplug any appliances or devices that aren’t being used so as to not drain unnecessary energy. You’ll want to keep your home toasty in these cold months, but turn the thermostat down in rooms you’re not often in, or while you’re away from the house. Make sure you’re making the most of each load of laundry and dishes by running a full load. Finally, invest in sealing your windows and doors, so no heat is escaping over the winter months.

It’s so easy to get used to clutter. It starts as a stack of books and odds and ends, but the next thing you know there’s a pile of junk where your bedside table or ottoman used to stand! Attack the clutter zones in your home and find a place for all these things – they had to come from somewhere, right? Make sure they’re organized in their original homes!

The holidays have a way of really filling your house up! Whether it’s gifts or new purchases, you suddenly have more stuff than you did before December hit! Take some time to go through your closet and cupboards and either purge or put things into storage. This way you’ll make more room for the new, as well as free up some space.

Be Bold

This piece of advice works in all aspects of your life and your home is no exception! If you’re planning to make changes in your home, try some bold additions! Whether it’s trying a bright new paint colour, a vibrant wallpaper, or a bold new home furnishing, be daring! You won’t regret it.
